This week my picks are La vie rêvée des anges (The Dreamlife of Angels) (1998 - ) and Der himmel über Berlin (Wings of Desire) (1987 - ).
In the first film, Élodie Bouchez and Natacha Régnier star as Isa and Marie, two girls living in Lille, France, with virtually no money. They are looking after a flat whose owners were in a car accident, and are now in comas. Isa spends time with the teenage girl who lived there, while Marie has a questionable affair with a rich playboy. Both of their lives become entrenched in these pursuits, and their friendship starts to slip away. A moving character study with a very young and appealing cast. Winner of three César awards, including Best Actress (Bouchez) and Best French Film.
After seeing The Dreamlife of Angels, you can witness the day-to-day life of angels in the second film. Director Wim Wenders' masterpiece (the basis of City of Angels) stars Bruno Ganz as an angel named Damiel, who has roamed around Berlin longer that the city has been there. All the angels there have been around since the beginning of time, watching the earth mature, and the human race emerge. Damiel falls in love with a trapeze artist (Solveig Dommartin), and yearns to become human himself. One of the best films of the 1980's -- it's much better than the American remake. Ganz's performance is incredibly powerful. It won Outstanding Feature Film at the German Film Awards, as well as many other awards from around the globe.
