This week my picks are Hilary and Jackie
(1998 - Emily Watson and Rachel Griffiths were both nominated for Academy Awards for playing musical sisters Jacqueline and Hilary du Pré in the first film. Based on the true story of the famous cellist, Jacqueline, and her sister who, although talented, failed at a career playing the flute and moved to the country. The film follows their relationship from childhood through Jacqueline's great success and decline after contracting Multiple Sclerosis. A wonderful choice for lovers of music and film acting. Continuing in the theme of musical rivalry, the second film is about the last few years of the life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce) and his relationship with Italian composer Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham). The story is told in flashback by an aged Salieri, who recalls his great awe and resentment of the young genius. A lavish production full of Mozart's greatest works, including his famous opera The Marriage of Figaro. Winner of eight Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director (Milos Forman), and Best Actor (Abraham).
