The History of FilmHead.com
(short as it may be)
June 28, 1999Matt Heffernan, an amateur web developer since 1996, ran several webpages, some more popular than others. His first domain was slithy.com, named for a lyric in a Lewis Carroll poem. This domain was used to forward visitors to his ISP account for both web content and email. His most successful area on this site was (and still is) Matt Heffernan's "South Park" Page. With the release of the new film South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut, he wanted to write a full review of the film, not just a capsule summary, like he did for each episode of the TV series.
He always wanted to create a website devoted to film, and this was a good time to start one. After searching months before for a good film-related domain, on this night he thought of "FilmHead.com". In a flash, there it was. After quickly checking for its availability, he was amazed that it was, and immediately jumped on it. On that night he decided that he would no longer be just another film buff, but an actual film critic. So this means going to every film that comes out. The good, the bad, and the ugly.
June 29, 1999The logo for FilmHead.com was created. It was chosen from several concept drawings that Matt made while watching TV. The design was then realized on his computer, and remains to this day.
June 30, 1999The South Park movie premieres. On this night, the first review was written for FilmHead.com. Also, the first video picks were made. Essentially, the first "draft" of the site was written. Luckily, the site became fully hosted earlier in the day, so everything was set to upload. Voila -- the site is born!
July 12, 1999The site is now in full operation, with the domain recognized on all servers. The first set of reviews appear in The Internet Movie Database. In this group were South Park, Wild Wild West, Summer of Sam, and An Ideal Husband. This increased the hits greatly. Every Monday since then, more reviews have been listed, constantly exposing new people to the site.
July 24, 1999FilmHead.com gets its 1000th pageview.
July 26, 1999Matt went to see The Blair Witch Project during the film's first week in New York. On this day, the review was listed in the IMDb, four days before the film went to wide release. This brings an unprecedented 265 pageviews to FilmHead.com that day.
July 29, 1999FilmHead.com made it into the film review directory of Yahoo! as the only "new" site for the next couple days. The site sees its biggest exposure ever, getting its 2000th pageview early in the day. After the 769 hits that day, the total number of pageviews reached 2457 by midnight, Pacific Time.
August 2, 1999Near the end of the day, FilmHead.com received its 5000th pageview. The site would remain on the Yahoo! "new" list for three more days before joining the regular collection. This seven-day boom introduced thousands of internet citizens to the site.
